Analyst: Belarus' constitutional foundations will not be radically changed

MINSK, 25 November (BelTA) – Belarus' constitutional foundations will not be radically changed, BelTA learned from Aleksandr Shpakovsky, Director of the information and enlightenment institution Actual Concept, after a joint session of the Constitutional Commission and the working group in charge of polishing the Constitution draft on 25 November.

Aleksandr Shpakovsky said: “The key question is: we are not changing the constitutional foundation of our state at the root. We are working upon the foundation of the existing Constitution and introducing certain amendments for the future.”

According to the political analyst, the present time may not require some constitutional changes. But if Belarusians are to preserve a stable state in the long term, they definitely need changes taking into account the modern reality and they need insurance mechanisms. “Insurance against letting people, who want to eradicate everything that has been done over the course of many years, rise to power,” he explained.

“The idea is to create a piece of legislation, the country's fundamental law, a constitution of the future that will allow growing in the long run,” Aleksandr Shpakovsky summarized.
