MINSK, 23 July (BelTA) - Belarusian universities have a strong reputation in China, and interest in studying in Belarus is growing among students from various provinces, Belarus’ Ambassador to China Aleksandr Chervyakov said in an interview with Andrei Krivosheyev, Chairman of the Belarusian Union of Journalists, BelTA has learned.
The ambassador emphasized that education is a key area of Belarus-China humanitarian cooperation, as the transfer and accumulation of knowledge form the foundation for development. He recalled a recent visit to Belarus of a delegation from Peking University and its meeting with the Belarusian president. Peking University is actively developing ties with Belarusian State University.
“We are working closely with China's leading university, Peking University, which is among the top universities in the world,” Ambassador Aleksandr Chervyakov remarked.
He described mutual student exchange between universities in Belarus and China as a foundation for future development and a form of people-to-people diplomacy, emphasizing that today’s youth will be responsible for preserving and strengthening the relationships built by the current generation. “We are laying the groundwork for future cooperation with China. Our task is not only to preserve, but also to expand it. Without youth, this is impossible. We are looking strategically toward the future.”
According to the diplomat, around 11,000 Chinese students are currently studying at Belarusian universities, while approximately 1,200 Belarusian students are enrolled in Chinese institutions. These figures do not include those participating in short-term exchange programs lasting several months.
“What we have today is already a significant result. But we will continue to expand this area by increasing the number of Belarusian students studying in China and Chinese students attending Belarusian universities. Especially since we see clear demand. Our universities are highly regarded, and we’re receiving requests to provide opportunities for students from various provinces to study in the Republic of Belarus,” the ambassador summarized.
