MINSK, 11 December (BelTA) – Since Soviet times, Belarus has preserved storage facilities for medium-range missiles, where the Oreshnik missile system can also be placed if necessary, independent military expert Aleksandr Alesin said in a new episode of BelTA’s YouTube project V Teme [On Point].
According to the military analyst, about 288 out of 510 Pioneer medium-range missiles were deployed in Belarus. After the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty came into force in 1988, the Pioneer system was dismantled and destroyed.

“By the time we gained independence, they [medium-range missiles] were no longer here. But, as President Aleksandr Lukashenko stated, the storage facilities in which they were placed have been preserved. The complex cannot constantly patrol the area; it needs maintenance. At the same time, it should be on combat duty all the time. Therefore, special storage facilities 'Krona' were developed. Even if the launcher was idle, it was still ready to start firing,” said Aleksandr Alesin.

The military analyst noted that such facilities had a sliding roof, which could be removed if necessary. Thus, even while undergoing maintenance, the complex could fire at targets that were put in the memory of the onboard digital computer.

“In order to mislead the enemy about the whereabouts of the systems, the following idea was put forward. There were special ovens that produced infrared rays. And satellite reconnaissance could not detect which facility contained the complex and which did not. And a number of experts expressed the opinion that this entire infrastructure could be used to deploy the Oreshnik missile system,” concluded Aleksandr Alesin.
