Aleinik: Armed conflicts could undo progress made towards SDG

MINSK, 16 October (BelTA) - On 15 October, Chairman of the Standing Committee on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic Sergei Aleinik took part in a discussion in the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development at the 149th IPU Assembly in Geneva, BeltA learned from the press service of the upper house of the Belarusian Parliament.

The discussion addressed the issue of parliamentary strategies to mitigate the long-term impact of conflicts on sustainable development. Sergei Aleinik focused on the difficult geopolitical situation and the consistent position of Belarus regarding the settlement of conflicts through political and diplomatic efforts.

"The current geopolitical situation is characterized by a high degree of tension in interstate relations, the restoration of bloc thinking and confrontation, a real threat of the escalation of some local conflicts into major ones. All this is facilitated by the degradation of the international security system, the termination of a number of fundamental treaties in arms control," Sergei Aleinik said.

He highlighted the importance of Belarus’ initiative voiced by Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko on the need to start a global security dialogue. He also talked about Belarus’ aspirations to restart important processes in the field of international security, including through a joint search for effective long-term solutions within the framework of the International Conference on Eurasian Security.

"There is no doubt that armed conflicts not only slow down the achievement of the SDGs, but can undo the progress already achieved in many areas of sustainable human development. The military lobby in the West has managed to redirect colossal resources to maintain conflicts in a hot phase, which is why today we see a reduction in social, economic and other programs designed to ensure sustainable development," Sergei Aleinik said.

The member of the Council of the Republic stressed the important role of parliamentary strategies to prevent and resolve conflicts.

On 15 October, Sergei Aleinik met with Chairwoman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbayeva,  First Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council of Bahrain Jamal Mohamed Fakhro, members of the Iranian parliamentary delegation.
