MINSK, 22 December (BelTA) – A recent episode of the documentary series Time Chose Us aired by the TV channel Belarus One covered the first visit of Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko to the Sultanate of Oman in 2007, BelTA has learned.
The first visit of the Belarus president to the Sultanate of Oman took place in 2007. Oman is an absolute monarchy and welcomes three official delegations per year at most. The Belarusian leader held a meeting with the sultan, who combines six posts at once: the head of state, the prime minister, the supreme commander-in-chief, the minister of foreign affairs, the minister of defense, and the minister of finance. The sultan is also the chairman of the central bank. It is a peculiarity of the Omani system of government.

“We had a good perception of your state geographically but we were surprised by the scale, by the level of development you have achieved,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said during the visit.
That visit determined priorities of trade and economic cooperation. The Belarusians arrived in Muscat as an impressive delegation consisting of heads of government agencies and representatives of the business circles. They were supposed not only to discuss cooperation, but also to develop the legal framework for it.

Before the visit the trade turnover was practically zero. After the visit the chambers of commerce and industry of both countries worked together and the ministries of taxes and duties signed an agreement to avoid double taxation.
