MINSK, 31 March (BelTA) - When appointing Yuri Karayev Grodno Oblast Governor, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko criticized some of the region’s performance indicators, although the region is considered to be the best in the country, BelTA has learned.
In particular, some forecast indicators fail to be fulfilled. “Two indicators were not fulfilled in January-February. As for the gross regional product, you are 2% shy of 100%. In general, Grodno Oblast was 5% behind the planned indicators. You have fallen some near 1% short in agricultural output,” said the head of state. “Of course, I understand it very well that the level of agriculture in your region is very high and it is difficult for to add more to it than for other regions. The indicators must be met however. You, as a military man, understand this better than anyone else. Maybe it is not so much of your fault, but the fault of the region's leadership in general, including the former governor. I believe there must be a solution to this state of affairs.”
The president also drew attention to the drop in the number of people employed in the economy, which is typical for other regions as well. “This is bad, but perhaps you can cope with the number of workers you have,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
The head of state also mentioned the indicator of construction and installation works in the region for 2024, which were underfulfilled by more than 17%. “This is the only region that has failed to meet the indicator,” the Belarusian leader said.

“The task has been set to ensure the annual gross harvest of 2.5 million tonnes of grain, leguminous crops, and maize from 2025. This task is mandatory,” the president said.
An increase in the cattle mortality by 11% from 2023 is another negative fact. “Both you and other regions will be held responsible for the loss of cattle. Others are doing even wore than you,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
There was also a small reduction, by 1,000 head, in the number of pigs in the region. “It is some kind of an insignificant shortcoming. 1,000 heads is a small number. We should pay close attention to this and other matters,” the head of state said.
“As we can see, it is not going to be an easy road for Grodno Oblast, either. Despite the fact that the region is more developed than others. Yes, the region has fewer industrial enterprises [than other regions]. Although with the commissioning of the nuclear power plant, you have got your share of work. But as for agriculture, it is a breadbasket of the country. We have always set Grodno region as an example, calling it a pearl of our country. People are hard-working, friendly. You are respected, and I know it very well. You have fit in well there. Like in your native land. I am happy with that,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
