MINSK, 8 February (BelTA) – A proposal has been put forward to allow criminal proceedings in absentia against the accused living abroad, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at a meeting of the Security Council on 8 February, BelTA has learned.
“This pertains to those who have committed or are committing exceptionally grave crimes in line with national legislation,” the president said.
According to him, such practices have long been in place in many countries, including European ones.
“I don't think that this will extend to a significant number of our citizens. Apparently, this is about a few members of the so-called self-exiled opposition. Unfortunately, there are such people. It will give food for thought to those who intend to harm the country, people, economy, and then hide abroad,” the Belarusian leader stressed.
