MINSK, 21 October (BelTA) – More than 5,000 km of roads have been repaired in Belarus in 2024, Minister of Transport and Communications Aleksei Lyakhnovich said in his report to Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko on 21 October, BelTA has learned.
Aleksandr Lukashenko demanded that roads between district centers and agricultural towns be put in order. The head of state set this task while receiving a report on the development of the network of national highways and transport infrastructure to ensure an hour’s accessibility to satellite towns.
Aleksandr Lukashenko asked the minister about progress to fulfill his tasks related to road construction and repair, as well as the development of transport infrastructure between the capital city and satellite towns.
“People are waiting for us to act. We should tell them honestly what we will do and where. They must understand that we will not be able to complete everything within one year or even five years (no matter how hard we try), but we will still accomplish a lot. This should be included in the program [the government program ‘Roads of Belarus’ for the new five-year period],” the president instructed.
According to Aleksei Lyakhnovich, more than 3,000 km of roads and 107 bridges were repaired in 2023, while as many as over 5,000 km of roads and 117 bridges were renovated in 2024. “This includes reconstruction, major repairs, routine repairs,” he informed.
“This is good. The road construction program should also envisage the repair and restoration of bridges. I don't think we need to build many new bridges. We need to reconstruct existing bridges. There are quite a few of old bridges. These are mostly minor ones, so we need to act preemptively instead of waiting for bridges to fall into disrepair or even collapse. This is very important for us,” the head of state emphasized.
“As far as national highways are concerned, we will repair more than 1,700 km out of 16,000 km this year,” added Aleksei Lyakhnovich.
Since the start of the five-year plan, the volume of funding for the construction and repair of roads has more than doubled. Br946 million was spent on these works in 2021, while in 2023 the funding doubled to amount to Br1.926 billion. Br2.5 billion will be spent on this purpose in 2024.
“Don't forget the task that I set: we should build roads with concrete pavement wherever possible (and impossible). Concrete is concrete. I drive along the Logoisk highway every day - yes, it is already cracked, but it has been in operation for more than 50 years. We fix cracks and keep using such roads further. The construction of concrete roads should be a priority of this program,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
