Need for long-term strategy for Belarusian pig breeding industry emphasized

MINSK, 16 April (BelTA) –  There is a need to develop a 10-year strategy for the development of ultra-modern pig breeding, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at a meeting to discuss rural development and efficiency of the agricultural sector, BelTA has learned.

In 2023, Belarus decided to build advanced pig farms. As the president recalled, he supported the government's proposal to build pig breeding complexes under the unified project for 100,000 head. "I was assured that there were opportunities to build on time, to optimize costs. But we need to think long-term," Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

The head of state believes that, taking into account Russia's practices, it is important to take a course for more effective, cost-effective large-scale projects. It does not have to be complexes for 300,000-500,000 head, the president noted. At first, it is necessary to carefully study the experience of such large farms, either to the west or to the east of Belarus. For example, China’s practices of building a multi-storey pig breeding complexes.

"You will decide what complexes to build. The government will help but will also hold you accountable [for efficiency and effectiveness], Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

The head of state urged to think long-term in the development of the pig breeding industry. "We need a 10-year strategy for the development of ultra-modern pig breeding farms in Belarus. The strategy should embrace all kinds of things: advanced genetics, feeds, environmental friendliness parameters. The goals are extra-ambitious: in-depth processing and export promotion," the president emphasized
