Lukashenko’s meetings with Putin focus primarily on security, defense

MINSK, 24 May (BelTA) – Matters of security and defense are the main topic during meetings of the leaders of Belarus and Russia. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement for reporters after negotiations with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Minsk on 24 May, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “We constantly do not simply discuss matters of security and defense of our states. We have created a joint military force to defend the Union State [of Belarus and Russia]. We constantly keep an eye on everything going on at our borders. We see it and know it starting with the construction of various fences and the inflation of tensions by military exercises going on near our borders. We pay top-priority attention to security. Many meetings of ours are dedicated to security and defense. About 90% or maybe even more. Except for today’s meeting during which we spent a lot of time talking about economy. More time than we talked about security. Because economy is one of the things underpinning security.”
