Lukashenko: We will keep the Great Victory topic on the front burner

MOSCOW, 14 March (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia should not forget about the Great Victory over fascism, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he addressed the Federation Council during his official visit to the Russian Federation, BelTA has learned.
The head of state emphasized the importance of preserving the memory of the  Great Patriotic War and the heroic deeds of our ancestors. According to him, Belarus has never renounced its historical legacy. “We have never downplayed it. This is our Victory, our pride. Why should we trash our past? Our ancestors emerged victorious. They are a good example for us. We should be proud of them,” the Belarusian leader said.

At the same time, he noted that without Russia's firm stance on these issues, it would be difficult for Belarus to defend its historical heritage. “Without Russia, we would not have held on to this. And now we are marching together, we are confident that we must not lose this Great Victory of ours,” he said.

The president emphasized that Belarus, like the Union State, takes good care of war monuments  and memorials and will keep doing so. For example, the Rzhev Memorial to the Soviet Soldier was funded by the Union State. Work is currently underway at the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial Complex. There are plans to put up a monument on Buinichi Field in Mogilev.

Aleksandr Lukashenko addressed special words of gratitude to the Russian side and personally to Valentina Matviyenko for the cultural and educational project Memory Train run by Russia's Federation Council and Belarus' Council of the Republic. This project is very popular, especially among young people.

“As for the 80th anniversary [of the Great Victory] and our common agenda, rest assured, we have done and are doing a lot. We will not back down, you can count on us. This is our common Victory,” the president emphasized.
