MINSK, 31 October (BelTA) – Further escalation of the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East threatens the world with far-reaching consequences beyond repair, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he addressed the 2nd Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security on 31 October, BelTA has learned.

“States are increasingly forced to use military force to defend their sovereignty and internal stability or to prevent escalation. Further escalation of the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East can cause irreparable damage on a global scale,” Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized.

The head of state noted that by zeroing in on just these two hotbeds, the world for some reason ignores another 55 armed conflicts going on in the world. These conflicts kill thousands of people every day. “Take the Yemen conflict, which the collective West is uncomfortable to talk about. In terms of possible repercussions, the Middle East and Ukraine do not even stand close. There, in the Indian Ocean and the gulf that the Houthis control today, an unimaginable catastrophe can unravel,” the president said.

“These hot spots are oceans away from some people. Maybe they are not so relevant from the point of view of political and economic interests. But they have an equally strong destructive potential,” Aleksandr Lukashenko is convinced.

He went on saying that virtually no legitimate international legal instruments have been left to provide military security guarantees. By and large, only two treaties remain: on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and on strategic offensive weapons.

“And even those don't work: the first is not implemented in practice, and the second one is now obsolete. It is very telling that nothing is being done to conclude new agreements in this area. This means that someone doesn't need them. And this is primarily the fault of politicians, not the military,” the Belarusian leader said.
