Lukashenko wants transparent list of activities for craftsmen

MINSK, 19 August (BelTA) – The list of activities craftsmen are allowed to do has to be precise, transparent and should contain zero foot dragging. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko pointed it out during a conference with top officials of the Council of Ministers on 19 August, BelTA has learned.

Handicraft activities were one of the topics covered during the meeting hosted by the head of state. The president reminded that the updated law on entrepreneurship activities had been adopted this year. It stipulates that craftsmen will become part of the entrepreneur community.

This is why a draft of the corresponding presidential decree is being prepared and the government will have to put together a concrete list of activities craftsmen are allowed to engage in. The president wondered what changes are suggested and how the choice is justified, whether the changes had been discussed with the population.

“Not only I but the entire population needs to clearly understand what kinds of activities will be legal as from 1 January 2025,” Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized. “We have state enterprises, private companies that are engaged in certain activities and pay taxes. But it is necessary to clearly determine what self-employed businessmen and craftsmen we will have, what they are, what taxes they will pay, and in what fields they will operate. Everything has to be precise, transparent, and without any mess and foot dragging.”

“You should pay attention to whether the suggested reformation will create prerequisites for the transition of some craftsmen, which activities are not covered by the list, into the shadow economy,” Aleksandr Lukashenko remarked. The matters raised by the president included the preservation of Belarus’ cultural heritage and the demand not to lose some rare craft in the course of the reformation.
