MINSK, 29 January (BelTA) – President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko urges not to overdramatize the situation in the economy and finance. He made the statement during the open dialogue with journalists on 29 January, BelTA has learned.
At the end of the previous year Belarus faced serious economic challenges which had an impact on the financial market. “This situation was driven by external factors since we have an export-oriented and absolutely open economy. Our main partners are Russia and Ukraine,” the President noted. In his words, the situation in Belarus was affected by the events in Ukraine as well as the economic and especially financial collapse on the markets of the Russian Federation. Besides, there were sanctions against Russia, reciprocal sanctions on its behalf, the devaluation of the national currencies in the neighboring countries in the economic union. The President mentioned serious devaluation of the Kazakhstani tenge at the beginning of the previous year and the later crash of the Russian currency.
“Given these countries account for nearly a half of our foreign trade, our export, of course, these events could not but affect the situation in Belarus. The psychological factor also plays a big role in this so-called market economy,” Alexander Lukashenko said. “Taking into account that our country is open, such events had an influence on us. We tried to react promptly, took the measures you know about and tried to ensure stability on the financial market of the country. It seems that we were a success. Let's see what the situation will be in the future. We are keeping an eye on inflation, do our best to satisfy the demand of our domestic market for consumer goods,” the head of state said.
He stressed that all that is done in a calm way. “I would like to say to those present at the meeting that mass media should not make noise about this issue if they want stability. Therefore, I reiterate that psychology plays a very important role in this so-called market economy,” the President said.
“Of course, there were certain problems. And you want to discuss these issues at the today's meeting. It needed to improve the performance of the economy, the state apparatus, the agricultural industry and the construction complex of the country. The country's leadership and the new government are working on these issues,” the Belarusian head of state said.
