VITEBSK, 2 September (BelTA) – Efforts will be put forward to raise the prestige of engineering and blue-collar specialties in Belarus, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at the Q&A session titled “Open Microphone with the President” at Vitebsk State University on 2 September, BelTA has learned.
The participants of the event asked the head of state what, in his opinion, should be done to increase the interest of young people in engineering and make it as prestigious as IT specialties.
According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, there is a need for a set of measures, including good salaries and efforts to raise the prestige of engineering profession in the society. For example, many people can call themselves “IT specialists” today because all young people know how to use gadgets and computers.
“Today everyone is an IT specialist, but there are few engineers. Hence the prestige,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
“Engineer is the most important specialty for a family,” the president added, explaining that people with the appropriate knowledge and skills can do many household chores on their own.
“We have deviated a little bit in this plan. We have an imbalance here today. We will be working to raising the prestige of engineering, blue-collar specialties to the highest level. The state needs it. It is a strategy,” the president emphasized. “If we do not do it now, tomorrow gadgets will mean nothing for us. Everything today comes from farmers and engineers both in agriculture and industry.”
