MINSK, 26 June (BelTA) – The EAEU member states should preserve everything they have inherited from the USSR, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he spoke at the plenary session of the Eurasian Economic Forum “Strategy of Eurasian Economic Integration: Results and Prospects” in Minsk on 26 June, BelTA has learned.
“We have been talking a lot lately about turbulence in the world; we hope we will get past it with God's help. If some of us (former Soviet republics) think that they can succeed on their own, reap immediate benefits, they are mistaken. We should not lose the common market that we have inherited from the Soviet Union. The production capacities that we have today are high-tech,” the head of state said.
In this regard, he cited Russia's way of dealing with the withdrawal of Western partners: “Although it is very hard but Russia is trying (and has done a lot in this regard) to bring back to life the facilities that were pretty advanced in the time of the Soviet Union. Even in the automotive industry. Take Lada, Moskvich, Zhiguli, as we called it. These are normal cars [made in Russia today]. Maybe not Mercedes yet, but good cars. The same in other areas.”
“Therefore, we should avoid such mistakes. We should preserve everything that we have inherited from the Soviet Union, and everything that is still functioning today. And in no case should we wander away. No one is waiting for us anywhere. We will come to realize that our collaboration makes economic sense for us. This is our space. It was created by many generations. And now we need to pay the most serious attention to this. We should stay together as we know each other and speak the same language for now,” the Belarusian leader said.
