Lukashenko unhappy with state of affairs in Belarusian film industry

MINSK, 2 December (BelTA) – What is happening in the Belarusian film industry is simply shameful and unacceptable, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he appointed Ruslan Chernetsky Culture Minister of Belarus on 2 December, BelTA has learned.

"The most important art for us is cinema. But what is happening in our filmmaking is simply shameful and unacceptable. It has degraded. It has become a far cry of the Soviet cinematography when it got serious attention . I cannot say that we are not interested in it. But for some reason everyone only wants to earn money, but cannot make a good movie. Pay the most careful attention to this," Aleksandr Lukashenko pointed out.

"Concerts are important too. It is significant for people. People want not only to work day and night, but also to have some fun. The Marathon of Unity, in which you are actively participating, has shown that people respond and understand dance and song arts, and so on. We should pay attention to this, but it is probably easier in our situation," the president added.

The head of state also explained that the decision to appoint a new culture minister was not related to the fact that the former Minister Anatoly Markevich had failed in his duties. "This person is from a different area. I purposely sent him there. I do not envy him: it was very hard for him. This is why I return to the idea that it should be 'their man', as they say, from culture. You are familiar with all this. You are a very patriotic, reliable person. I hope you will be able to handle this job. I just want to say in a manly way: Ruslan, you have no other way, either die or put things in order," Aleksandr Lukashenko said figuratively. "Our people are talented, they can do everything: make movies, sing, dance, and so on. We will provide you with all kinds of support. We will help and support you."
