Lukashenko: The entire nation should embrace the state ideology

MINSK, 15 March (BelTA) – It is necessary to work out a state ideology for the entire nation. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement during a meeting timed to the 30th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “I support the proposal of [Director General of the National Library and the head of the public association Znaniye] Vadim Gigin, who said that we should work out a state ideology. And certainly, we will discuss it at the highest level – the Belarusian People’s Congress. Possibly a concept. Possibly some specific plans. Or maybe the entire state ideology theory. If we can. But I’ve always said that we shouldn’t rush it. If we feel that we have at least a concept of the state ideology, then we should probably realize it without hesitation. But we cannot afford mistakes.”

The president went on saying: “This state ideology should inspire the entire nation. There will be no elites, peasants, and workers if the entire nation embraces the ideology.”

He agreed that if 2020 had not happened, it would have been necessary to invent it with all its hardships and challenges. “I often talk about it. We saw a lot. The year held up a mirror for us. But are we ready to say that we have ideas for this ideology? I don’t know. You have to convince me of that first and foremost. If I am convinced, then I am ready to go ahead and organize the process,” the president said.

The head of state suggested that work on the matter should continue. He stressed once again that the country badly needs a state ideology.

According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, the state ideology can also rely on some postulates and laws from the Bible, on Christian values as well as the current Constitution. “After all, it is the result of everything we’ve lived through. It should be some kind of pillar. I don’t want to say it should be the entire foundation. But it should definitely serve as a pillar for our ideology. We are going to have meetings and discuss these problems. Particularly those concerning the future of our state,” the Belarusian leader concluded.
