KORMA, 12 October (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko suggested growing grapes, apricots, and watermelons in Gomel Oblast as he addressed a ceremony honoring the farmers during Dazhynki 2024 harvest festival in the town of Korma, Gomel Oblast on 12 October.
“The climate has become milder. It is the right time for you to engage in the cultivation of grapes, peaches, and watermelons. This should be your specialty: to produce what is in demand and what others cannot do due to weather conditions,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
The head of state recalled that onion cultivation in Belarus started in Gomel Oblast and before it was imported. “Now we need to do the same, produce new products that we still have to import. We need to grow what our people need, and what we can sell abroad,” the president said.
In his words, Gomel Oblast successfully grows fruits, vegetables and berries today. The region accounts for up to 45% of the country’s vegetable peas output, some 25% of onions and almost 100% of asparagus beans.
“Work is underway, but we need to speed it up. We cannot fall behind. If we fall behind, if we stop, we will be trampled by those who follow. The region needs to secure stable results and efficiency. You need to learn to get milk yields, weight gain, and crop yields above the national average in any season under any conditions. Without any declines and failures. This is the task for our scientists as well. You need to involve them in winter seasons,” the president said.
The head of state hopes that young scientists with their fresh vision, innovative ideas and inventions will make a prominent contribution to the Polesie development program, and also other programs aimed at further development of the country.
