MINSK, 29 May (BelTA) – At the meeting with the leadership of the Council of Ministers on 29 May, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko proposed giving rental housing in remote areas to workers for free, BelTA has learned.
“Maybe it would be right if a young employee is gifted housing located somewhere in the middle of nowhere (although there are no such places in Belarus anymore). Give it for free. Perhaps someone has an alternative view, let's discuss it. This is negotiable,” the head of state said.
In his report, Prime Minister Aleksandr Turchin upheld the president's proposal. One of the issues on the agenda was the suggestion to allow rural residents to buy out rental housing that requires major repairs, upon the condition that they will do the repairs.

“Perhaps the next stage will be to consider giving away such housing for free, this way people will have accommodation and the government will not have to spend money on repairing it. At present there are about 16,000 unused rental houses and apartments that are in the ownership of local administrations,” the head of government said.
Referring to his experience as a governor, Aleksandr Turchin noted that there is a lot of such housing in rural areas: “These are apartments of collective farms that were turned into rental housing. Many houses like that are located in settlements that are not thriving. And rental housing in such communities is not in demand, thus we have to do something about it.”
