MINSK, 5 December (BelTA) – People, a fair treatment for them and sovereignty are the cornerstones of Belarus' political agenda, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he addressed members of the House of Representatives and the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the sixth and seventh convocations on 5 December, BelTA has learned.
Addressing the MPs, the head of state emphasized: “Belarusians have put their trust in you as they gave you the right to represent their interests and pass laws. They entrusted you with strengthening the sovereignty and independence of our state. Important and hard work is ahead. In fact, most of this work usually remains behind the scene and is often underestimated. The current convocation of the House of Representatives should reverse this situation,” the president said.
“The parliament is a place for a professional and well-grounded debate. We are fully aware that different people may have a different vision of the same issues. Your task is to go through all these views and arrive at the most reasonable and sensible decision,” the head of state said.
In his view, a tradition of a civilized and intellectual debate should remain in place, however, emotions should not be brushed aside, either. “Emotions are an integral part of our national identity. There should be a wise, composed and sensible attitude to decision-making. Emotions should not run too high. To put it frankly, all of us have difficult and responsible work to do. However, we have everything in place to succeed and this is first of all due to people's unity and a political will of the country's leadership to move forward,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
The Belarusian head of state noted that “the ultimate goal is to preserve our national values that underpin the country's political agenda: people, a fair treatment for them and sovereignty”.
