MINSK, 10 June (BelTA) - Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko spoke about the current geopolitical challenges and the situation around the country at the meeting to discuss the national film industry on 10 June, BelTA has learned.
“God has saved us and is helping us to preserve this piece of land. Look, there is war raging all around. Take Finland. I am well aware of the situation. I am sorry that I have to give you this political information here today. Putin told me: ‘Listen, we used to be in good terms [with Finland]’. He said that our people used to go shopping there, and everything was good. But they decided to join NATO,” the head of state said

“They start talking about blocking the Baltic Sea,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said. “To block trading ships, including ours. Today we do not trade through Lithuania and Latvia, as we used to. Those crazy minds do not let us there. We trade through Leningrad [ports of Leningrad Oblast] through the Baltic Sea. They [opponents] say they will close a passage somewhere in Denmark. We will let them bully us? Military ships will escort merchant ones.”
“Now, the Baltics, the Baltic three states, Poland. Well, what did these three [Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia] lack? I saw how it was. They were supplied with everything necessary. To show that the suburbs of the Soviet Union were developing and so on. Those republics used to be high-tech. They have ports. They has all the conditions to live and thrive. We used to trade a lot. There was a huge amount of resources. What did they lack? Okay, they wanted to be independent. We want to live independently too. Why spit in our direction?” the head of state spoke about the three Baltic states.
Aleksandr Lukashenko went on saying: “I don’t even want to talk about Poland. You know everything about it. Then, there is a war raging Ukraine. Below it the the Caucasus, it has not ended there yet.”
“What I'm saying this for? Here is this island [calm and stable Belarus]. Do you think they will let us live in peace? All of this causes considerable tension. And the president is at the frontline, pardon my immodesty. Then, relieve me from the duty to oversee filmmaking in the country,” the president said, emphasizing the personal responsibility of filmmakers for their business.
