VOLOZHIN, 19 October (BelTA) – Private talks with representatives of Western countries were held a day before, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at the regional stage of the Dazhynki harvest festival in Volozhin on 19 October, BelTA has learned.
“During the pre-election period, everyone takes an exam. I once came up with a good formula: not only the incumbent president, but also all of us need to take an exam in front of our people. What I mean by that is that today all eyes are on Belarus. Believe me, Belarus is on everyone's radar,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
“Yesterday [18 October] I did not make any public appearances, but it was a very difficult day. I had very tough, difficult, but interesting negotiations with representatives of Western countries. And when I talked to them, I realized how closely they are watching us. How meticulously they search for and study our mistakes and successes. They speak honestly and openly off the record. You know they (including the richest countries) envy us. They envy us because we know how to work, live, celebrate, because we, a relatively small country, have found our own path of development and have walked it with dignity,” the head of state remarked.
The president also noted that many events are currently taking place in the country, including the Marathon of Unity. Aleksandr Lukashenko compared this marathon to Dazhynki, the difference is that the marathon is meant for the creative intelligentsia: “Our creatives are also having a busy time now, as I tell them: you must make our people happy. They are coping with it well.”
“I asked creatives and civil servants to hold this great event all over the country, to show that not only workers, peasants, but also creative people are worthy of our acknowledgment. There will be many such events,” the head of state remarked.
