MINSK, 31 October (BelTA) – The resolution of the conflict in Ukraine is essential for security in Europe, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said at the opening of the Munich Security Conference Core Group Meeting in Minsk on 31 October, BelTA has learned.
“The resolution of the conflict in Ukraine is essential for security in Europe. If the conflict is unresolved, peace on the continent will be under threat,” Alexander Lukashenko said.
“This is a kind of test for our ability to do something, to make decisions and to preserve Europe as our common home. If we fail to settle this serious conflict, we will turn into good negotiators, will meet for talking shops, but will never arrive at any solution,” the Belarusian leader emphasized.
In his words, no one has been able to stop the clashes in the east of Ukraine – be it the Normandy Four, or the OSCE trilateral contact group or the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine or the Volker-Surkov format.
According to Alexander Lukashenko, the most terrible thing is that many people, including civilians – women and children – keep dying.
“More than three and a half years have passed since the Minsk agreements were approved by the Normandy Four. But none of the items have been implemented. Although this does not mean that the agreements are bad. They are recognized by Russia, Europe and the United States as the only way to the Ukrainian settlement,” the Belarusian leader said.
“We see that the situation is escalating. Deliveries of anti-aircraft, anti-tank and other lethal weapons to the region bring a radical scenario closer. According to our data, they bring advanced weapons for radio-electronic warfare not only on the ground but also in space. What else do they have to bring? Nuclear weapons? Then the war will be unavoidable,” he said.
Alexander Lukashenko also noted that Belarus received 160,000 refugees from Ukraine and provided them with all necessary things, assisted with finding a job, provided healthcare service, social and psychological adaptation. “In a word, they found here their second home. It was not easy for us given our current social and economic situation,” he said.
The president also drew attention to security issues and regular seizure of weapons on the border, which, of course, requires resources.
“In fact, this is the conflict on our land, not even at our doorstep. Therefore, we are so concerned about this situation,” Alexander Lukashenko said.
