Lukashenko reaffirms his commitment to fighting corruption

MINSK, 12 February (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko reaffirmed his commitment to combating corruption as he spoke at the 6th Belarusian People's Congress on 12 February, BelTA informs.

“Civil servants, keep in mind: there is no place for corruption here and will never be. I have never backed down on this cause and will never drop it,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

The president added that from time to time opponents of the authorities try to find some illegally acquired property of his. “I don't mind. If anyone has any doubts on this, I will invite journalists to see this property and will personally tell them about it,” the head of state said. “So you don't have to worry. I would not fight so fiercely and openly with swindlers and gangsters if I had a finger in the pie,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

The head of state noted that the problem of corruption came in fifth or sixth in opinion polls. At the same time, people in the neighboring countries see corruption as the most pressing problem of their countries.

According to the president, Belarus' traffic police are occasionally subjected to a range of integrity checks to see if they take bribes. “The recent check has showed that none of them took a bribe. One started pondering on this topic, to my shame, opposite the Palace of Independence. He was offered a bribe, he began to discuss it, and but then he went ‘No, no, no, go. Not today and not tomorrow, just go'. In other words he had this gut feeling. And there were dozens of attempts to give a bribe, but none of them worked. This is something I am really proud of! I am proud of such people,” the Belarusian leader said.
