KAZAN, 23 October (BelTA) – Russia will never use nuclear weapons deployed in Belarus without permission of Belarus’ leadership, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said in an interview with BBC journalist Steven Rosenberg on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, BelTA has learned.
“Putin will never use the weapons that are deployed on the territory of Belarus without the consent of the president of Belarus. Make no mistake about it,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
At the same time, if Belarus needed to resort to nuclear weapons for self-defense, it would also consult with Russia. “They are our ally. The entire West consults with Americans,” the head of state remarked.
The president emphasized that nuclear weapons are not a bogeyman, but a powerful deterrent, and he will be ready to use them if necessary. “If even one boot crosses the border of Belarus.”
That said, Aleksandr Lukashenko did not reveal the algorithm for making a decision on the use of nuclear weapons. “I will say only one thing: these weapons cannot be used without my permission. But if Belarus needs to use them, they will be used. I reiterate: nuclear weapons are an unsettling topic. You asked about it and I answered. It is a bad idea to blackmail the world with nuclear weapons. We are not going to use them if the situation remains like it is now,” the Belarusian leader remarked.
