Lukashenko promises to complete major storm relief effort within days

MINSK, 19 July (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko promised to eliminate all the bottlenecks in connection with the consequences of the recent thunderstorms within a couple of days as he spoke at a teleconference on 19 July, BelTA has learned.

“I want to reassure people once again and promise that within a couple of days we will eliminate all bottlenecks related to the natural disaster aftermath. We will also spend a month to renew some things, to strengthen energy supply infrastructure. We see what problems we have. We have learned our lessons. We will finish all the work within a month,” the head of state said. “The first-priority efforts have already been taken. We need to remove diesel generators from villages. In order to get rid of them, we need to supply electricity. We will do it this week.”

“All necessary response works, as we agreed, were done by 16 July. Here I am responding to all sorts of statements by our self-exiled opposition and others. They said that the president promised to do it before 16 July, and they delayed it till 19 July. Well, perhaps they have hearing problems. The instruction was to restore road and rail transport movement by 16 July. We had huge problems there. Trains were running up to 7 hours late. Everything was done very quickly. All the works there were completed even earlier,” the president said.

Electricity supplies were restored in all settlements by 19 July. “However, we still have more than 100 villages with diesel generators. They need to be removed, and all these villages should be connected to the power grid. We need to solve these problems,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

“We will solve all the issues to overcome the consequences of this devastating storm and make appropriate conclusions. This work must be done, and we are also waiting for relevant information from you to make decisions,” the president added, addressing the participants of the conference.
