Lukashenko promises changes to financial management in sport industry

MINSK, 3 March (BelTA) – There will be changes to the financial management in the sport industry, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he addressed re-appointed Sport and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk on 3 March, BelTA has learned.

“As for the tough demands on wages, taxes and so on, you need to warn everyone that important changes are coming. It is unacceptable that every issue in sport is covered using budget funds,” the head of state said. “Everything should be put in order here. You [new Vice Premier Vladimir Karanik], the minister, and the NOC head need to discuss and made decisions on all financial issues. You need to make everything clear.”

“We are arguing about salary sizes and stuff like that today. Some of our coaches, who have not even made it to the playoffs in their sports, get salaries thrice as much as the president. Some Br35,000-40,000. Everything should be brought in line,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

“They are outraged with the proposal to limit the size of salaries? I read that [Chairman of the Belarusian Football Federation Nikolai] Sherstnev spoke about it. No problem. Go, earn money and pay salaries you want. But they instead of working take huge sums out of the budget. If there is a result, there is money, land plots, apartments and so on and so forth. If there is no result - there is nothing to talk about,” the head of state added.
