MINSK, 22 June (BelTA) — Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko addressed the fellow Belarusians as the country marks the Day of National Remembrance of the Victims of the Great Patriotic War and the Genocide of the Belarusian people on 22 June, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian head of state.
“22 June 1941 is a sacred date in our history. Belarus faced a severe trial that has forever left an indelible mark on the people’s memory. Believing in their invincibility, absolutizing violence and aggression, the war machine from the West came here to kill, conquer and enslave. They forgot just one thing. It was the love of freedom, devotion and perseverance of the people living on this land. They paid dearly for it,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said in his address.
As the president noted the summer of 1941 is not only about the past: “There will be no more blitzkriegs and treacherous attacks. We have learned the lessons of Western hypocrisy and lies once and for all. We achieved the great victory at too great a price.”
“Every generation of Belarusians has its own destiny. Some are destined to fight and be ready to give their lives for their homeland. Others - to keep the memory of military exploits and to make sure the fire of war does not scorch the native land again. Preserving peace is our sacred duty. We will always remember the heroism of our fathers and grandfathers and be always grateful for the peaceful sky above our heads,” the address reads.
