MINSK, 16 April (BelTA) – It is necessary to examine the efficiency of subsidies for agriculture, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he hosted a meeting to discuss rural development and efficiency of the agricultural sector, BelTA has learned.
“We need to look into this matter again. I feel that the worse an enterprise performs, the more support it gets. Then why would they want to work better? It’s just a waste of money,” said the head of state.
Aleksandr Lukashenko ordered to come to grips with the situation and submit a report. He emphasized that the measures taken to improve the financial standing of agricultural organizations are extremely inadequate.
The head of state drew attention to the insufficient work to integrate loss-making agricultural enterprises into well-performing companies. At the same time, Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized that such decisions must be made after thorough consideration. Struggling companies should not become an albatross around the neck of successful farms.” Yet, it is necessary to take things up a notch in this field.
“This problem must be solved this year. You have plenty of powers, the mechanisms are clear and tested. All that remains is to make informed decisions with subsequent oversight over their implementation.”
Aleksandr Lukashenko cited an example: the instructions to turn around the Kupalovskoye holding company in Mogilev Oblast have not been fulfilled for several years. There has also been no return from the establishment of agro-industrial associations in Vitebsk Oblast.
“Who will tolerate this? Aleksandr Mikhailovich Subbotin [Vitebsk Oblast Governor] swore to rectify the situation. So I’m waiting,” the head of state said.
