Lukashenko opines on future of neural networks

MINSK, 26 January (BelTA) – After casting his ballot in the presidential election on 26 January, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko told journalists whether Belarus would regulate issues related to artificial intelligence, BelTA reports.

The conversation turned to risks associated with the development of neural networks and the need to pass legislation regulating this field, as is done in some countries.

“We are currently studying this matter. We are at the initial stage now, but we will be moving quickly. Voice cloning is not the only danger coming from neural networks. We will be able to explain this to people. If things spiral out of control, we will declare a war on it and act in a war-like manner, but we will not cede our country. We will pull out all the stops in this case, you can be sure of that. We will act in a tough and resolute way,” the head of state said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that while in the UAE, he paid a lot of attention to the development of artificial intelligence there. “The Emiratis are very immersed in this topic,” the president noted.

He also remarked that “the UN secretary-general has recently made a statement that doubled down on what experts around the world say: today humankind does not know how to control and manage artificial intelligence, this can lead to the death of all humanity."

Speaking about regulation of artificial intelligence, the head of state noted: “We are currently studying this matter in order to make a decision. And we are likely to go the Chinese way, strictly protecting our country.”

He went on saying: “We know that they can fake a person's identity, but we can 'vaccinate' people. The main danger comes from those who are ahead of us, first of all the United States (China will not harm us), because they have the capacity to destroy our country. And if the Americans, having invested half a trillion dollars in this field, think that they can use it to get ahead of others, they are wrong, because the effect may be the opposite. Trump, a businessman, a billionaire, is surrounded by other billionaires, like Musk. They should be afraid that this can backfire. They will release this beast from the cage and it will bare its teeth against them.”

Along with this, the head of state drew attention to how carefully China uses artificial intelligence – they use it in those areas that are important for society, for example, medicine, defense.

Aleksandr Lukashenko expressed admiration for China's achievements.
