Lukashenko opines on censorship on social media

MINSK, 29 January (BelTA) – The world will eventually embrace the idea of censorship on social media, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with Belarusian students on 29 January, BelTA has learned.

Answering the students' questions, the head of state said that he believes that sooner or later countries will start imposing censorship on social media. However, Belarus cannot be the initiator of this process, the president stressed. “I believe that this process should be initiated by the one that created this serpent and let it out of the bottle,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said. “We will not be able to do this. If we shut down one means of communication it will manifest itself otherwise,” he added.

The head of state is in favor of a strict ban on invasion of privacy and destruction of a country's social and political system. “Social networks and messengers can help foment revolutions around the world. We see that many countries also report events that are organized through these networks from abroad. For example, the situation in Belarus was controlled from Poland and Lithuania. To my mind, the world is one step away from making these decisions. But they should be suggested by the global powers,” the president noted.

Aleksandr Lukashenko announced that Belarus will adopt additional measures in this field in the coming months to protect the government's and people's interests.
