Lukashenko not worried by warm weather’s effect on winter crops

MINSK, 26 January (BelTA) – The winter has yet to come while the current weather is not dangerous for winter crops. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement during a press conference held on 26 January when asked about the abnormally warm winter, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian leader shared agricultural wisdom by saying: “What is going on right now is not dangerous for the harvest. Plants start vegetating at around 7-8C above zero. The vegetation of plants in winter is dangerous now. They cannot be given additional supplements. They have to use up their own nutrients. If the weather was warmer, it would be dangerous. If the air temperature is at 1C, 3C, 4C above zero, the plants stay calm. They don’t use nutrients. There is no fear. If the weather turns really cold, god forbid of course, the rapeseed will be frozen. And we have a large area under this crop. Some winter crops may be damaged.”

“But if things stay this way till spring, there is no fear. We will apply nitrogen as an additional fertilizer to all our winter crops and they will sprout. The most important thing is to avoid drastic changes. But the winter will still come,” Aleksandr Lukashenko is convinced.
