MINSK, 29 January (BelTA) – Not everyone wants to see Russia independent, self-sufficient, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with Belarusian students on 29 January, BelTA has learned.
“We did not drop to our knees, we did not subdue, hence the pressure on us. Today Russia has come under pressure. No one needs an independent self-sufficient Russia. They want Russia the way it was in the 1990s under Yeltsin. I was there, saw it first hand,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
According to the president, back then the U.S. special services worked in Russia actively and openly managing all processes. “They gave a start to privatization, the destruction of the Soviet Union's weapons stocks. Such processes were gaining traction in our country too but I nipped them in the bud. Not because I am a dictator and an authoritarian leader but because, above all, I refused to destroy weapons,” the head of state noted.
