MINSK, 11 February (BelTA) – Speaking at the 6th Belarusian People's Congress, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko answered a question about his dream. This question had been put during his meeting with students in January, BelTA has learned.
“At the meeting students asked me about my dream, and I promised to give an answer later. I thought a lot about it, but, to be honest, I could not think of an answer to this simple question. Of course, I am not a dreamer, I am a realist. I set goals and work hard to achieve them together with my people. My goal is to live for my country, for you, to work together for a better life for ourselves, to achieve prosperity, as we have always done,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
The president is confident that a solid foundation was laid for the Belarusian statehood over the quarter of a century. “We have established a national tradition of a broad public debate on the future of our country. History has showed that we made the right decision in 1996 when we opted for a strong central government. Yet, we need to realign the system now. However, back then we managed to retain the country. We were saved by unity, state power, order, a strong state, a power vertical,” the head of state noted.
Aleksandr Lukashenko believes that back then the country was standing on the edge of the abyss and there were attempts to push it off a cliff. “Do you remember my first program - to take people away from the abyss? I delivered on everything I promised, by and large. There were minor flaws. However, we did not just take people away from the abyss, we did not let any scum penetrate our country. We were building our country for our children for a quarter of a century,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
According to him, the next five years is the time to refresh and refine what has been achieved, to identify the points of growth in the economy and to promote effective mechanisms of civil participation in decision-making processes. “If we keep safeguarding our country this way, Belarus will be an advanced, prosperous, safe and comfortable country for everyone. All this is within our power,” the head of state believes.
“We must make sure that the history of each of us becomes part of the history of our beautiful, cozy country. And remember that we must protect it and not cede it to anyone, because we don't part with those we love,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
