Lukashenko lays wreath at Tomb of Unknown Soldier in Moscow

MOSCOW, 8 May (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow, BelTA has learned.


Participating in the ceremony were veterans of the Great Patriotic War who came to Moscow from Belarus at the invitation of the Russian side, the Russian war veterans who took part in the liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders, Chairperson of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia Valentina Matviyenko, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Ivan Melnikov, State Secretary of the Belarus-Russia Union State Grigory Rapota, Executive Secretary of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Belarus-Russia Union State Sergei Strelchenko, Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization Nikolai Bordyuzha, Hero of Russia, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Yuri Vorobyov, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council committee for international affairs Dmitry Krivitsky, Deputy Chairperson of the State Duma committee for CIS affairs, Eurasian integration and relations with compatriots Tatiana Moskalkova, Hero of the Soviet Union, Hero of Russia, Russia President's Special representative for international cooperation in the Arctic and Antarctic, Artur Chilingarov, Moscow Vice Mayor Leonid Pechatnikov, Chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Russia, head of the Communist Party faction in the State Duma Gennady Zyuganov, Chairman of the Council of the Federal National Cultural Autonomy of the Belarusians of Russia, Assistant to the Russia President's Envoy to the Siberian Federal District Valery Kazakov, Chairman of the National Cultural Autonomy of the Belarusians of Moscow Sergei Kandybovich, pilot-cosmonaut, two-time Hero of the Soviet Union Piotr Klimuk, top-ranking officials of the Eurasian Economic Commission, the Minsitry of Foreign Affairs, other organizations of Russia, Belarusian cadets studying in Russia, and officials of the Belarus Embassy in Russia.

The monument is located in the Alexander Garden near the Kremlin. The dark red porphyry monument is decorated with a bronze sculpture of a laurel branch and a soldier's helmet laid upon a banner. In the center there is a niche that reads Your Name is Unknown, Your Feat is Immortal with a bronze star, inside of which there is the Eternal Flame. To the left of the tomb there is a granite wall with an inlay stating: 1941 - To Those Who Have Fallen For The Motherland - 1945. To the right of the tomb, lining the walkway are dark red porphyry blocks with incapsulated soils from the hero cities, including Minsk.

Alexander Lukashenko observed a minute of silence in memory of those who died in the war.

The Belarusian President and the participants of the ceremony reviewed a march by the guard of honor of the Moscow garrison and the unit of the 5th special forces brigade which will be taking part in the military parade on Red Square on 9 May.
