Lukashenko in favor of international organization able to counterbalance UN

KAZAN, 24 October (BelTA) – I would welcome an organization that would act as a counterbalance to the UN, including BRICS, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia on 24 October, BelTA has learned.

"Everyone got concerned saying that we are creating some kind of a counterbalance to the UN," the Belarusian leader said. “If you are afraid of this counterbalance, you should not join BRICS. As for me I would like to see such a counterbalance there so that the UN starts performing better. An organization with a global reach.  BRICS still might turn into a global organization, not a regional one. This is not the SCO (the SCO is regional). I want there to be an organization that will be a counterbalance to the UN," the president said.

He explained why he is dissatisfied with the current state of affairs in the UN: "What do we have? Why are we spending money? To gather there to speak from the rostrum? With an empty hall, mostly... I would like it to be effective, for the Security Council to resolve the issue, not just have get-togethers there. For the time being it is a veto and that’s it, the issued remains unresolved."

The Belarusian leader expressed confidence that issues of war and peace should be addressed only in the UN. "If the UN decides to stop a war, it must be stopped. But it is not the case. The Americans are blaming the Russians. Why do you blame them? How many wars and conflicts you are involved in today! How many wars you still intend to unleash…" the president noted.

He cited the situation in Taiwan as an example of such US policy: "They are ready to interfere. They are creating the AUKUS military alliance. That is why the UN is not fulfilling its role."
