Lukashenko frowns on praise aimed at him

VITEBSK, 2 September (BelTA) – As he talked to students at Vitebsk State University on 2 September, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said he feels awkward at times when he hears praise aimed at him, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “It is necessary to calmly accept this reality. They’d better praise me when I am no longer the president. It will be good. But when you have the power and your subordinates start praising you too much, I feel awkward. Even if I understand that I deserve it.”

He called for a careful approach to history because it is often “adjusted” to suit the moment when various leaders and heads of state lived. “This is something I am trying to safeguard our generation from. Particularly the intellectuals. This is why I don’t praise intellectuals too much. I don’t pet them and I don’t lure them with money. By no means,” the head of state noted.

Otherwise, the new president will have to break the intellectuals so that they would praise his period of work, Aleksandr Lukashenko noted.
