MINSK, 1 December (BelTA) – In an interview with Dmitry Kiselyov, Director General of the Russian state news agency MIA Rossiya Segodnya, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko explained why the idea to deploy Belarusian border guards on the Ukrainian-Russian border fell through, BelTA has learned.
"I understand very well what is happening in Ukraine and what the way out of this situation is. But this solution was not used then. I was ready even to deploy my border guards along the 400km Ukrainian-Russian border. I was ready to close this border," Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed.
According to the head of state, at the height of the war in the Donbas, he discussed this issue with the Russian president. Vladimir Putin supported the proposal since Belarus was a neutral party to that conflict. "But Ukraine opposed it. They torpedo any normal initiatives," the president said.
