MINSK, 10 April (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko evaluated BRICS’ prospects and explained the importance of Belarus’ participation in the organization during an interview with the Interstate TV and Radio Company Mir, BelTA has learned.
Belarus’ participation in BRICS was mentioned during the interview. Belarus has recently become a partner state in BRICS. Speaking about what prospects it opens up for Belarus, the head of state stressed: “BRICS is the future”.

Dwelling on the topic, Aleksandr Lukashenko drew attention to the response of U.S. President Donald Trump to the possible introduction of a currency by BRICS countries as an alternative to the U.S. dollar. “He vehemently argued against BRICS. He cautioned that BRICS is allegedly creating a currency as an alternative to the U.S. dollar,” the Belarusian leader noted. “I don’t think he said it for no good reason. Although he says a lot of things for no reason in particular. I guess this statement is carefully thought out.”

“He stated that they will put pressure on BRICS, choke it and so on. It means they feel a competitor. It means that BRICS is the future,” the head of state stressed.

In his words, nobody in BRICS promotes the introduction of an alternative currency but it can be done with the passage of time. “For now Brazil or China and other countries don’t need it. Although China is about to start needing it. We and Russia have long been in favor of having an alternative currency because we see what the U.S. dollar’s monopolism can produce,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

The president is convinced of BRICS’ great prospects and of importance of Belarus’ participation in this organization. “Look at how many countries want to join it today. How many have joined and would like to join,” he pointed out. “BRICS represents the world’s leading states, with which we cooperate. What is wrong with sitting at the same table with them? I am talking about earthly things. When I visit BRICS [summits], I can meet with ten heads of state and come to terms. Listen, you have these things. We can sell you this and buy that from you. In other words, certain arrangements concerning trade and economic relations are being made.”

“Shouldn’t we be part of it? We should,” Aleksandr Lukashenko went on saying. “We are going there in order to ensure the normal existence of our state while relying on our friends, our neighbors, on the Russian Federation, on the People’s Republic of China, on Brazil. We have normal relations with other states that belong to BRICS.”
