Lukashenko explains criteria for evaluating performance of ambassadors

MINSK, 31 July (BelTA) – Embassies are expected to work on attracting new capital into Belarus. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement during a conference with heads of diplomatic missions on 31 July, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “I say it once again: for me the ambassador and the embassy are not about politics. They are about export, primarily merchandise export, about trade, about new investment projects, technologies, and jobs. We will evaluate you only in this manner. I tell you all the time: there is plenty of spare money and capital in the world but you need to know how to take them. Bring them to Belarus. Create an understandable list and conditions for investing in Belarus.”

At the same time he called for eliminating hardcore bureaucracy and making the so-called development institutions produce results: the National Agency of Investment, the National Center for Marketing, the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and so on.

“I sometimes wonder why we keep them around and even at the state expense. The government needs to evaluate their performance in a fundamental manner, work out proposals on direct interaction with ambassadors and on the responsibility for concrete instructions,” the president said.

The head of state pointed out that facts of corruption had been unearthed in the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “It is surprising that taint has been found even there. It is their choice,” he stressed. Aleksandr Lukashenko assured that such crimes would be found out in any case and no forgiveness would be offered to anyone.
