Lukashenko eager to revisit flax industry development

SHKLOV, 9 August (BelTA) – A new government conference will be held in autumn to discuss the flax industry. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the relevant statement at a government conference in Shklov, BelTA has learned.

The head of state said that he intends to revisit the matter in autumn. “We will talk about flax at a dedicated meeting at premises of the linen mill for the fourth time at my level. We are in agreement. In autumn. The entire process flow is over there. I already told the minister a week ago that flax is a political crop. Flax is on our state emblem. It is not the point but it is one of the reasons. The demand for flax goods is gradually rising. Flax is back in fashion. It is a blessing. It is our product,” the president said.

He noted that there are still many shortcomings in this field starting with flax farming and providing the processing industry with high-quality raw materials. Although scientists have made some headway into this field and there are agricultural enterprises in Belarus that have learned how to farm flax competently.

Aleksandr Lukashenko also touched upon the work of linen mills. They were modernized some time ago but according to the reports the president gets, some spots need retooling once again. “Make up your minds at last about how many linen mills we need. Define the areas where we will grow flax. And then we will talk about linen mills but it is necessary to make the most out of these ones. Give a serious thought to these matters,” the Belarusian leader urged. “Let’s take care of it. And it is a good piece [of work] primarily for Mogilev Oblast and Vitebsk Oblast. It is necessary to look into these plans.”
