MINSK, 21 January (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko believes that Donald Trump's statements regarding the U.S. territorial claims to Canada and Greenland were made to a greater extent to resonate in the media. The head of state made the statement as he spoke to the MAZ workers on 21 January, BelTA has learned.
“We don't want to fight. We want to live peacefully. So let us live peacefully and not shout that the golden age has come for the American people, and that you will now live well at the expense of other nations. Look, the world has changed. So I think these are such fake statements that will never be realized,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said. “It is all bluster, made for the media. Tomorrow he may say: “I'll drop a nuclear bomb on Canada if it doesn't become the 51st state.” Or something else. He will not do it. Or he may say, “I'll take Greenland tomorrow”. What do you need it for? You are already present there, with U.S. military. You can do there whatever you want. No Denmark [of which Greenland is a part of] actually governs Greenland.”
The Belarusian president believes that the USA should pursue such a policy so that neither Canadians nor Mexicans would “frown upon it”. In this regard, he mentioned another Trump’s proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico into the Gulf of America.
“Or make claims against Panama that it doesn't maintain the Panama Canal in the right way. That they do not set prices in the right way: the Chinese have one price, the Americans another. So it's their property. You yourself [Donald Trump] want to raise tariffs by 25% for Canadians and others. You'll make Canadians beggars with this move,” Aleksandr Lukashenko cited the facts.
“These claims do not add credibility to the country: making Canada or Mexico another US states... Well, what do you want from Russia then? You see how all this can be projected immediately. That is why politics is a very serious thing. Especially for the leaders of large countries,” the head of state added.
