Lukashenko criticizes price hike for popular car brand in Belarus

MINSK, 30 May (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko criticized the price hike for the popular car brand in Belarus as he hosted a session to discuss the bill on the improvement of Belarus' social and economic policy in Minsk on 30 May, BelTA has learned.

The head of state criticized the spikes in prices for a certain car brand: “Will you please tell me how much the Atlas [Geely Atlas passenger car] costs today? In U.S. dollars? Can anyone tell me? What are you doing here then? You do not know the price of the only car which is in great demand both in Belarus and in Russia."

"It is $27,000-28,000. We are out of the $25,000 range," said Vasily Gerasimov, Chairman of the State Control Committee.

"Actually, it was $27,000. You will need to clarify what the prices is today and get back to journalists... Your prices have doubled! Does the government know that? Do you think people will be happy about it? You are telling me about the problems with logistics, money and other things... Listen, the two-time increase is way too much!" Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

According to the dealership, the price of the cheapest version of the new Geely Atlas Pro car starts from Br87,400 or almost $34,000 at the current exchange rate. The most expensive versions cost in the region of Br103,000 or about $40,000.
