MINSK, 12 February (BelTA) – The referendum on the new Constitution might be held concurrently with local elections, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at the 6th Belarusian People's Congress on 12 February, BelTA informs.
According to the president, the new Constitution is to be drafted and passed within a year. He noted that after its adoption, it will be necessary to amend a large amount of normative legal acts.
“We should deliver what the head of state has promised: after adopting the Constitution within the next 11-12 months, we should implement its main points. This will require amending a whole array of laws and legislative acts. I am convinced that we will draft a new Constitution by the end of this year and adopt this fundamental document in a referendum within the next 11-12 months, possibly combining the referendum with local elections. I think it is a good idea, it will help save some resources,” the president said.
In line with the election calendar on the Central Election Commission's website, elections to local Councils of Deputies shall be held no later than 18 January 2022.
