Lukashenko concerned about use of COVID-19 topic for political, economic purposes

MINSK, 19 October (BelTA) – The COVID-19 topic is used for political and economic purposes, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at the meeting held on 19 October to discuss the situation with COVID-19 in Belarus, BelTA has learned.

The head of state drew attention of the meeting participants to a very serious issue, i.e. the use of another coronavirus wave for the economic and political weakening of individual countries. “The fact that this issue is used by states for the economically purposes is no longer disputed today. Strong states want to destroy their competitors. Strong states - such as, let's say, the United States of America, the European Union. Everyone needs markets. If we stop our enterprises today, it will benefit them,” said Aleksandr Lukashenko.

“A economic war is in full swing on a worldwide scale. The weakest states may perish in economic terms. From my point of view, they will most likely to perish,” the president said.

In addition, the head of state is very concerned that the topic of COVID-19 is used for political purposes. "The COVID topic was used for political purposes in the first wave. We came under this attack as we were in the middle of an election campaign. The biggest trigger was COVID. Who doesn't understand this? We see political blackmail during this wave too. It would be good if we deal with this wave and survive this difficult time as quickly as possible," the Belarusian leader said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that he sees no catastrophic developments during the current situation with the spread of coronavirus infection and that he shares the cautious optimism of specialists who point to some emerging trend towards the reduction in the rate of morbidity.
