GRODNO, 24 August (BelTA) – After visiting the Gozha military training area Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko met with senior officials of the security wing at the base of the 6th Separate Guards Mechanized Brigade in Grodno on 22 August, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian president stated with regret: instead of focusing on economy and other day-to-day matters of the country, he has to spend time on stabilizing the situation. “I would not say that it pertains to the country [in general]. First of all this is about Minsk. I do not even want to mention Grodno in this context. Nevertheless, what worries me the most is that an external factor is now at play in addition to the domestic affairs. We see serious movements of NATO troops in direct vicinity to our borders in the territory of Poland and Lithuania,” the Belarusian leader said.
In this regard he noted that for the first time in a quarter of a century he had to take a dramatic decision to put the main forces of the army on full combat alert and dispatch troops to the western part of the country.
Before taking a decision on the political situation in Grodno, Aleksandr Lukashenko asked to brief him on the current situation and its possible development.
