Lukashenko comments on border security

MINSK, 29 October (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko commented on border security as he appointed new aides in Brest Oblast, Grodno Oblast, the city of Minsk, BelTA has learned.

“I do not want to talk publicly about the measures we are conducting on the border or are planning. I need military men there. Of course, it is easier for Valery Vakulchik [new aide in Brest Oblast] because he once dealt with the border security issues. I think they will share experience with Yuri Karayev [new aide in Grodno Oblast] who has more experience in ensuring law and order. They will find common ground. They worked together," the head of state said.

According to him, border security will be among the responsibility of the new aides. "We need to look at things again today. We did a lot to ensure the border security. To close the border does not mean to ring down an iron curtain. The border is the zone of friendship of peoples. You see, they have issued a challenge to us. What friendship is this? But peoples should not be blamed,” the president said.

“We have always been a reliable shield for Poles, Lithuanians, Latvians, and even Ukrainians on the border. We did not let anything and anyone through. What else do they want from us?”

According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, border protection matters are in the spotlight due to the spread of coronavirus in the world. “You are aware of a severe outburst in Europe, the number of new cases has increased several times. There are about 1,000 new cases [positive tests] per day in our country. Thank God, there is no outburst of COVID-related pneumonias,” he said.

According to the head of state, Belarus has all necessary tools to tackle the infection, including ventilators. However, we should stay vigilant, the president believes.
