MINSK, 23 October (BelTA) – Belarus is actively involved in exchanging the bodies of the dead and prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he gave an interview to journalist Olga Skabeyeva of the Rossiya TV channel on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia on 23 October, BelTA has learned.
“They often say that the Emirates are facilitating exchanges and so on. All these swaps pass through me. Captives, prisoners of war. This is done on the territory of Belarus,” the president said.
He emphasized that when it comes to POW exchange, Belarus managed to build trusting relations with both sides: “I am glad that the military (maybe even Zelensky is aware of this) and the Russian leadership trust us. We have created conditions for them to enter our territory and exchange the bodies of the dead. I think, 75 prisoners of war have been exchanged recently. This has already happened many, many times. Both sides are satisfied. It is not that simple.”
“That is why we know what is happening there. And we maintain these contacts,” the Belarusian leader added.
