PETRIKOV DISTRICT, 24 May (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko called for a wider use of irrigation systems in the country's agriculture as he visited the Agro-Lyaskovichi dairy farm in Petrikov District on 24 May, BelTA has learned.
“We should think like they do in Voskhod [a farm near Minsk]. There is a lot of water here – the Pripyat. People here can earn money on vegetable crops, plant a garden, choose a plot to grow potatoes. There is a huge market in Russia, just near our borders,” the president said.
He instructed to prepare warehouses to keep the future potato harvest.
“We need water. It is a shame that we complain about the lack of water near the Pripyat,” the Belarusian leader said.
The head of state also instructed to maximize the use of flood meadows to ensure the availability of fodder base.
Head of the Belarus President Property Management Directorate Yuri Nazarov reiterated the need to pay attention to the introduction of irrigation systems. “This year the Pripyat has not even broken its banks. The year is not going to be easy. The president recalled the need for the development of irrigation systems in the country. We have a lot of water in the country - rivers, lakes, but irrigation is poorly practiced. I am sure that we will succeed in this area,” he said.
Work in this direction has already been launched. For example, not long ago, Aleksandr Lukashenko spoke about the potato growing experiment using irrigation. This is done in the Voskhod farm. “We have allocated 30 hectares under the project, and put up an irrigation system. It was made in cooperation with the motor plant. I am sure that we will get at least 1,000 centners of potatoes per hectare on these 30-hectare plot. This is the prospect of irrigation systems,” the head of the Belarus President Property Management Directorate said.
